Getting started on Mac

Install, activate, choose what to watch and connect an iPhone or iPad.

Updated

Install and activate

  1. Download and install

Download the app from Download for Mac. Open the downloaded disk image and drag nOversight onto the Applications folder beside it. Later versions arrive in the app itself: nOversight checks for updates and offers to install them.

  2. Start a trial or enter a licence

Open nOversight. The licence window offers a 3-day Basic trial and a 7-day Pro trial. You can reopen it at any time from Help › Manage License.

  3. Enter your licence code after buying

After buying, the licence code arrives by email. Enter it in the licence window under Your licences.

Choose what to watch

When nOversight opens, its start window asks how you want to explore data. Pick a live source on the left, or open a saved recording on the right.

The start window: watch this Mac, watch a connected iPhone or iPad, or load a file.
  • This Mac reads the Mac’s own Wi-Fi. No phone needed. Press its start button to begin.
  • iPhone or iPad reads a connected phone live, by USB or over the network. Choose the device from the list, then press its start button.
  • Load a file opens a saved recording or imports logs, log archives and sysdiagnose files. This needs Mac Pro.

Get back to the start window

You can return to the start window at any time from the folder button in the toolbar.

The folder button in the toolbar reopens the start window.

Connect an iPhone or iPad

  1. Plug the phone in and unlock it

Use a USB cable. Keep the phone unlocked while you set up.

  2. Trust this Mac

If the phone asks whether to trust this computer, tap Trust and enter its passcode.

  3. Choose the phone

In the start window, under iPhone or iPad, select Refresh devices, then choose your phone from the list.

Refresh devices, choose the phone, then press start.
  4. Start the capture

Press the start button next to iPhone or iPad. Readings from the phone begin to arrive.

  5. Turn Wi-Fi off and on again on the phone

On the phone, open Settings › Wi-Fi, switch Wi-Fi off, wait a few seconds and switch it back on. The phone rejoins the network and writes the connection details nOversight needs to start tracking.

Over the network

Once the phone has been trusted by this Mac, nOversight can also find it over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. You can then walk with the phone while the Mac stays put.

  1. Put both devices on the same network

The Mac can be on Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Keep the phone unlocked.

  2. Choose the phone

Select Refresh devices and choose the phone from the list, then start and reconnect the phone’s Wi-Fi as above.

Troubleshooting

The phone is not listed

Unlock it, reconnect the cable and accept the trust prompt again, then select Refresh devices. On a network connection, check that both devices are on the same network and that it allows Bonjour.

No readings appear

Check that a trial or licence is active in Help › Manage License. For a phone, turn its Wi-Fi off and on again after starting.

Activation fails

Check that the licence is for the Mac app, not the iPhone and iPad app, then contact support.
