Getting started
What is nOversight?
nOversight shows how your iPhone, iPad or Mac experiences Wi-Fi. Walk around with it to see signal strength, link rate and changes of access point as they happen, on a map or in AR. No extra hardware is needed.
Which devices does it work on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, and Mac with macOS 14 or later. The phone and Mac apps have separate licences.
iPhone, iPad or Mac?Why does nOversight install a Shortcut?
Apple does not give apps detailed Wi-Fi connection data directly. The Shortcuts app is the route Apple provides, and you control it. nOversight guides you through installing a Shortcut called “Network to nOversight”. Choose “Always Allow” when asked.
I installed the Shortcut. What next?
Return to nOversight and tap Play in the top-right corner. Nothing is collected until you do.
No readings
I installed the Shortcut but no readings appear.
The Shortcut permissions were probably not fully accepted. Open the Shortcuts app, delete “Network to nOversight”, then return to nOversight, run the setup again and choose “Always Allow”.
Readings stopped after a minute.
The free app runs live sessions of 60 seconds. Basic removes the limit; Pro also records walks to keep.
PlansThe Mac app shows no readings.
The Mac app does not analyse without an active trial or licence. Check Help › Manage License. A subscription on iPhone or iPad does not unlock the Mac.
I started a phone capture on the Mac but nothing is tracked.
After you connect a phone and start the capture, turn the phone’s Wi-Fi off and on again in Settings › Wi-Fi. The phone rejoins the network and logs the connection details nOversight needs to start tracking.
Walk tests
How should I walk a test?
Join the Wi-Fi you want to test, tap Play and follow the route people actually use. Move at a normal pace and pause in the rooms or spots that matter. For a call problem, make a live call during the test. To compare before and after a change, repeat the same route with the same device and similar conditions.
How do I keep a walk?
Recording a walk to replay later needs Pro on iPhone and iPad. Pro also exports the readings as CSV, with an option to mask network names and locations first. On a Mac, Mac Pro records when the toolbar is switched from Inspect to Record before you start.
Where does my data go?
The analysis runs on your device. Internet tests, when switched on, contact outside test services. Recordings and exports stay with you until you choose to share them.
Privacy policyDiagnostic captures
What is a diagnostic capture, and why add one?
iOS keeps some Wi-Fi readings in its own diagnostic logs rather than sharing them with apps: retries, how busy the channel was and Apple’s record of each roam. A diagnostic capture (sysdiagnose) taken on the same phone soon after a test brings them into nOversight. Importing one on iPhone or iPad needs Pro. Which readings are present depends on the iOS version.
Where do I find the sysdiagnose file?
On iOS 27, open Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements › View Analytics Logs. On earlier versions the last item is called Analytics Data. The file name starts with sysdiagnose_. If it is not there yet, wait a few minutes and open the list again.
Is a sysdiagnose safe to share?
A sysdiagnose holds much more than Wi-Fi. Importing it into nOversight doesn’t upload it anywhere. Share the file only with someone you trust.
Mac and a connected phone
How do I see my phone’s Wi-Fi on a Mac?
Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac by cable, or over the same network. The phone must trust the Mac, and a network connection needs Bonjour (mDNS) to be allowed. The Mac then shows the phone’s readings live, including the detail a sysdiagnose would add.
My phone is not listed on the Mac.
Unlock the phone, reconnect the cable, accept the trust prompt and select Refresh devices. Over a network, both devices must be on the same network and it must allow Bonjour; guest networks and client isolation block it.
Can the Mac open my saved walks?
Yes, with Mac Pro. Mac Pro also imports diagnostic captures, shows the Access Points view and creates PDF reports.
